Medicare in Long Beach by the numbers

Long Beach is the largest community on this site by both population and residents past 65. Its ten ZIP codes on this page are home to 373,686 people, and 52,820 of them are 65 or older, which is 14.1 percent against 15.2 percent for Los Angeles County; 41.6 percent of occupied homes are owner occupied against 45.9 percent countywide. Those counts come from the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, summed from the age brackets rather than estimated from a percentage, and they are not spread evenly. Lakewood Village's 90808 has 8,304 residents past 65, 21.1 percent of its population, with 82.5 percent of homes owner occupied, one of the highest ownership rates of any ZIP code on this site, a median age of 44.8 and a median household income of $137,855; Belmont Shore and Naples in 90803 hold 7,105, 22.5 percent, with a median age of 47.4, one of the higher figures on this site; downtown's 90813 holds 5,352, 10.4 percent, with 15.1 percent of homes owner occupied, a median household income of $54,526 and 57.2 percent of residents speaking Spanish at home; and the west side's 90810 holds 5,253, with 12.4 percent of residents speaking Tagalog at home, one of the highest Tagalog shares on this site. Across the ten ZIPs the Spanish speaking share runs from 11.3 percent in 90808 to 57.2 in 90813.

Three general hospitals inside the city, and the Kaiser hospitals outside it

Long Beach holds three general hospitals. MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center at 2801 Atlantic Ave and College Medical Center at 2776 Pacific Avenue sit in 90806, licensed for 411 and 121 beds, and St. Mary Medical Center at 1050 Linden Ave in 90813 is licensed for 360. East, UCI Health Lakewood at 3700 South St is licensed for 172. There is no Kaiser hospital in Long Beach: Kaiser Foundation Hospital Downey at 9333 Imperial Highway is licensed for 424 and Kaiser Foundation Hospital South Bay at 25825 South Vermont Avenue in Harbor City for 257, both reachable only through a Kaiser plan. Those counts come from California state licensing records, read this month. MemorialCare, College Medical Center, Dignity Health, UCI Health and Kaiser are separate systems, and the plan's medical group decides which of their hospitals is yours. Medicare Advantage networks are built around medical groups rather than around the insurance company's name, so two plans carrying the same logo can reach completely different doctors, and those contracts are renegotiated year to year. Before you enroll in anything, Lara pulls each plan's current directory and confirms your doctors, your hospital and your pharmacy, and she repeats that check each fall when plans publish their changes.

    One city, several Medicare questions

Long Beach is really several markets, and Lara's review starts with which one you are in. On the east side and the shore, where most homes are owner occupied and incomes run above six figures, the questions are the income surcharge on Part B and Part D premiums for higher earners, set from the tax return of two years earlier and correctable with Form SSA-44 after a life changing event such as retirement, whether a Medicare Supplement's flexibility is worth its premium for a household that travels or keeps doctors on the Westside, and the long term care conversation, how care would be paid for and how a home is treated under Medi-Cal's rules. Downtown and on the west side, where most households rent and more than half speak Spanish at home, the help check comes first: Extra Help lowers Part D drug costs for people under its income and resource limits, and someone with both Medicare and Medi-Cal can be eligible for a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan, of which Los Angeles County has 47 in 2026; Lara works in Spanish and English in the same conversation. Everywhere in the city, the medical group behind a plan decides which of the three hospitals admits you, and a plan that holds MemorialCare is not automatically a plan that holds St. Mary, so every doctor on your list is checked against each plan's current directory before anything is signed. For anyone still working at 65 with coverage from an employer of 20 or more people, including the port and the city itself, Part B can usually wait without penalty until that job ends. Across the county's general enrollment Medicare Advantage plans, out of pocket maximums run from $199 to $9,250 in 2026, and the Part D cap is $2,100.

Medicare Advantage in Long Beach by the numbers, 2026

Long Beach sits in Los Angeles County, one of the biggest Medicare Advantage markets in the country. In 2026 the county has 74 Medicare Advantage plans open to general enrollment plus 47 Special Needs Plans, per the CMS 2026 Landscape file, and 65 of those 74 plans charge a $0 monthly plan premium. About 57 percent of the county's 1.7 million Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or other Medicare health plans (CMS, May 2026). Our analysis of the same CMS file puts the average in network out of pocket maximum across the county's general enrollment plans at $2,428, with a median of $1,700 and a range from $199 all the way to $9,250. That spread is the whole argument for comparing before you enroll: two $0 premium plans can differ by thousands of dollars in a bad year. We run that comparison for Long Beach families at no cost: (818) 472-5484.

Straight answers, and the fine print up front

Here is exactly how this works. Lara is a licensed independent insurance agent, and her help costs you nothing, because licensed agents are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through an agent, online, or directly with the insurer. What an independent agent adds is the comparison: she is appointed with several carriers rather than one. She does not carry every plan available in Los Angeles County, and she will tell you when something she cannot sell looks like the better fit for you.

Medicare help in Long Beach from a licensed broker

Goulson Insurance Services Inc. is an independent insurance agency, and our agents work as licensed brokers for Long Beach families. Independent means no single insurance carrier employs us or decides what we recommend, so the comparison starts with your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. We compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D drug plans from multiple carriers side by side and help you enroll in the one that fits. The agency holds CA license 6020069, Lara Goulson holds CA license 0E69969, and the team works in English, Spanish, and Hebrew. Whether you searched for Medicare help near me, a broker, or a local agency, it is the same licensed help, and it costs you nothing, because carriers pay broker compensation, which is regulated by Medicare.

No, and you do not need one. Lara works with Long Beach families by phone, by video, or at your kitchen table. The agency's offices are in Century City and Valley Village if you prefer to meet in person.

It depends on the plan's medical group, not on the plan's name. MemorialCare Long Beach, College Medical Center and St. Mary each contract with specific plans and medical groups under contracts renegotiated every year, and Kaiser members go to Kaiser Downey or Kaiser South Bay. Lara checks each plan's current directory for the hospital, your doctors and your pharmacy before you enroll, and again each fall when the new year's changes are published.

No. Licensed agents are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent, and your premium is identical whether you enroll through an agent, online, or directly with the insurer.

Yes. North Long Beach has its own page on this site, Lakewood and Signal Hill are covered, and so is the rest of Los Angeles County. Plans and their networks are set by county, so everything on this page applies across the city lines.
