How Lara Helps California Residents at No Cost
Lara is licensed in California and based in Los Angeles, and she works with clients across the state by phone and video. Nothing about the process requires you to drive anywhere. Her help costs you nothing. Insurance carriers pay agent compensation, so your premium is identical whether you enroll through Lara or directly with the company. What changes is the comparison. She looks at plans from multiple insurance companies rather than a single carrier's menu, checks your doctors and prescriptions against each option, and explains the tradeoffs in plain language. Appointments are available in English, Spanish, and Hebrew.
Medicare in California: The Basics
More than 7 million Californians have Medicare, one of the largest Medicare populations in the country. As of January 2026, slightly more than half of California beneficiaries chose Medicare Advantage over Original Medicare, so plan choice here is wide and competitive. The building blocks are the same everywhere. Part A covers hospital stays. Part B covers doctors and outpatient care. Part C, Medicare Advantage, bundles A and B through a private plan with its own network and usually its own drug coverage. Part D is stand alone prescription coverage that pairs with Original Medicare, often alongside a Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap. California also funds free counseling through HICAP, the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program, the state's version of SHIP. HICAP gives unbiased education. Lara complements it with licensed, personalized enrollment help and year round service. The 2026 numbers for California, from the official CMS Landscape file: 272 distinct Medicare Advantage plans are offered in at least one California county, 185 of them with a $0 monthly premium where offered, plus 130 Special Needs Plans. The in network out of pocket maximums on those plans run from $199 to $9,250, with a median of $2,900. What is actually available depends on your county, which is exactly what we check at your address (Goulson analysis of CMS CY2026 Landscape data).
Medicare Open Enrollment Runs October 15 to December 7, 2026
The Annual Enrollment Period for 2027 coverage runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, and the changes you make take effect January 1, 2027. During that window you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or change your Part D drug plan. California plans change networks, drug formularies, and extra benefits every year, so the plan that fit you last year may not be the right one for 2027. Booking a review before October keeps the decision unhurried instead of squeezed into the first week of December.
California's Medigap Birthday Rule
California law gives you a 60 day window that begins on your birthday each year to switch your Medigap policy to one with equal or lesser benefits, from any carrier, with no health questions and no medical underwriting. You must already have a Medigap policy to use it. This is one of the most consumer friendly Medigap rules in the country, and many Californians overpay for years because they never use it. A quick annual check around your birthday can tell you whether the same benefits are available for less somewhere else. Californians who qualify for Medicare before 65 because of a disability also get a six month guaranteed issue Medigap window when Part B starts, though this protection does not extend to eligibility based on ESRD.
Cities We Serve in California
Los Angeles has one of the deepest Medicare Advantage markets in the country, plus network questions around Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Health, Providence, Keck Medicine of USC, and Kaiser Permanente. San Diego clients often weigh Advantage networks against the freedom of Original Medicare with a supplement, especially retirees who travel or spend part of the year out of state. San Francisco and the Bay Area have a different carrier mix and different medical groups, so plan comparisons there rarely match what a friend in Southern California has. Sacramento and the Central Valley round out the picture, and phone and video service reaches every California zip code equally.
Why Use an Independent Agent Instead of Calling Carriers
A carrier's phone line can only quote that carrier. The representative is not allowed to tell you that a different company covers your cardiologist or prices your inhaler in a lower tier. An independent agent compares across companies, explains tradeoffs like the birthday rule and drug formularies, and stays your point of contact after enrollment. Medicare also does not pay for most long term care, which is a separate conversation worth having once your Medicare choice is settled.
Talk to a Licensed Agent About Your California Medicare
Medicare is easier when someone reads the fine print with you. Lara Goulson is licensed in California and ten other states, compares plans from multiple carriers, and stays available after you enroll, when the questions about claims, drug tiers, and provider changes actually show up. There is no fee for any of it. Carriers pay agent compensation, so a California resident pays exactly the same premium whether they enroll through Lara, through a call center, or on their own.
