Life Insurance in Colorado, Explained Plainly by an Agent Licensed in the State

Life insurance in Colorado deserves its own page because Colorado has its own say in what a policy delivered here must promise: how the return period works, how much grace a late premium gets after the first year, when a company loses the right to contest a claim, and how interest runs on a death benefit until it is paid. Lara Goulson is licensed in Colorado and serves Colorado families by phone and video from our Los Angeles offices, in English, Spanish, and Hebrew. What follows is the conversation we would have at your kitchen table.

What protections does Colorado build into a life insurance policy?

Several that matter on the hardest day. In a policy of the kind we sell, the company's right to contest what was said on the application ends after two years in force during your lifetime, with narrow exceptions such as unpaid premiums; a suicide exclusion on the death benefit itself can reach only the first policy year; and every premium after the first year carries at least thirty days of grace with the coverage in force.

A policy of the kind we sell carries a return period, and Colorado law sets a fifteen day minimum for those it reaches, printed on the policy's first page or attached, with the refund paid directly to you. Some level term policies sit outside it, so we read its own return terms with you, and if you are replacing coverage you already own, in most replacements the new company must allow thirty days to return the new policy. The company may charge interest on a premium paid in the grace month, and if a claim arises then, it may deduct the premium still unpaid for that policy year from the proceeds. Colorado also bars a company from turning you down or charging you more solely because of lawful foreign travel you have taken or plan to take. It may exclude, limit, or price coverage for specific travel differently, but only when independent data backs the difference. After a claim, the company may not hold the money longer than reasonably necessary, and interest on a lump sum runs from the date of death until payment.

How Much Life Insurance Do You Need?

Who watches over life insurance in Colorado, and who do you call with a problem?

The Colorado Division of Insurance, part of the state's Department of Regulatory Agencies. It regulates and monitors both the insurance companies and the agents who sell in Colorado, answers consumer questions directly, and investigates complaints, including complaints about life insurance.

If you have a question about how a policy works or what a clause means, the Division's Consumer Services Team answers at 303-894-7490, or toll free at 800-930-3745 from outside the Denver metro area. A complaint goes through its secure online consumer portal, where you open an account and communicate with the Division, or on a paper form you print and mail to its Denver office at 1560 Broadway. The Division's website also lets you verify any agent's license before you buy, and we hope you look up ours. Colorado law restricts what an agent may say in any sales setting about the protections that exist if an insurance company becomes insolvent, so for that one subject please ask the Division directly rather than relying on this page. Everything else about your coverage we will answer plainly, in English, Spanish, or Hebrew.

    Term vs Whole Life Insurance

Term or permanent coverage for a Colorado family paying a mortgage?

For most working households, term coverage sized to the mortgage and to the years your children depend on your income does most of the work, and it buys the largest benefit for the lowest premium. Permanent coverage earns its keep where the need never ends: final expenses, a family member who will always need support, or something you want to leave behind no matter when you go.

Think in jobs rather than products. In Colorado, about 66 percent of households live in a home they own, and the median owner with a mortgage carries $2,326 a month in housing costs, so for a family in Aurora or Colorado Springs the first job is making sure that payment survives a lost paycheck. Term covers that window at the lowest cost, and Colorado's own consumer guidance admits no formula fits everyone: some advisors start at two to six times annual income, then adjust for the number and ages of dependents and the family's needs. If the premiums stop, a term policy ends, and the company owes you no refund of the premiums you already paid. On a policy of the kind we sell, Colorado gives you a grace month of at least thirty days on premiums after the first policy year, the coverage stays in force during it, and the late premium can carry an interest charge. Permanent coverage costs more and does the forever job. Statewide, 17 percent of residents are 65 or older, and for many of them the answer is a modest permanent policy sized to final expenses and to what they want to leave behind.
