Medicare in Pasadena by the numbers
Pasadena has one of the largest numbers of Medicare age residents of any community on this site. The six ZIP codes together are home to 151,001 people, and 26,939 of them are 65 or older, which is 17.8 percent against 15.2 percent for Los Angeles County. Those counts come from the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, summed from the age brackets rather than estimated from a percentage. They are not spread evenly: 91107 in East Pasadena has 7,313 residents past 65, 22.6 percent of its population, and 91105 around the Arroyo is 27.6 percent, one of the highest shares of any ZIP code on this site, with a median age of 47.6 and a median household income of $156,791, while 91101 downtown is 15.2 percent owner occupied with a median age of 36.5 and 91106 around the colleges is 11.6 percent past 65. Across the city 44.8 percent of occupied homes are owner occupied, 28,319 households out of 63,192. Of residents aged 5 and over, 57.0 percent speak only English at home, 23.5 percent speak Spanish, 6.1 percent speak Chinese and 5.5 percent speak a language the Census counts as other Indo-European, where Armenian and Persian are recorded; in 91107 the Chinese share is 10.6 percent, one of the higher shares on this site.
One general hospital inside the city, and the plan decides whether it is yours
Huntington Hospital at 100 W California Blvd is the only general hospital inside Pasadena, licensed for 493 beds; Las Encinas on Del Mar is a psychiatric hospital, listed separately. The next nearest are in the neighboring cities: USC Arcadia Hospital at 300 W Huntington Dr is licensed for 348 beds, Adventist Health Glendale at 1509 E Wilson Terrace for 415 and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital at 1812 Verdugo Blvd for 110. Kaiser Foundation Hospital Los Angeles at 4867 Sunset Blvd is licensed for 492, reachable only through a Kaiser plan, and Los Angeles General Medical Center at 2051 Marengo St, the county hospital, for 572. Those counts come from California state licensing records, read this month. Huntington, USC, Adventist and Kaiser are four different systems, and a plan that reaches one is not automatically a plan that reaches the next. Medicare Advantage networks are built around medical groups rather than around the insurance company's name, so two plans carrying the same logo can reach completely different doctors, and those contracts are renegotiated year to year. Before you enroll in anything, Lara pulls each plan's current directory and confirms your doctors, your hospital and your pharmacy, and she repeats that check each fall when plans publish their changes.
Two Pasadenas, and a fire next door
The Medicare review runs differently on the two sides of the city. Around the Arroyo and in East Pasadena, where more than half of households own and the median age is in the mid forties, it is usually a review of a plan that has been in place for years: whether a Medicare Supplement's steady premium or a $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan with the right medical group fits now, given that in 2026 the county's general enrollment plans carry out of pocket maximums from $199 to $9,250, and the long term care question, how care would be paid for and how a home is treated under Medi-Cal's rules, which belongs in the same conversation. Downtown and around the colleges, where most households rent, the questions are the first-time ones: whether to delay Part B while still working for an employer of 20 or more people, and, for anyone on a modest income, the help check, since Extra Help lowers Part D drug costs for people under its income and resource limits and someone with both Medicare and Medi-Cal can be eligible for a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan; eligibility depends on income and assets and takes a few minutes to check. Since January 2025 there is a third group: Altadena families displaced by the Eaton Fire and now living in Pasadena, for whom a permanent move outside a plan's service area opens a Special Enrollment Period, covered on the Altadena page. One thing said plainly: one in sixteen Pasadena residents speaks Chinese at home, and Lara works in English, Spanish and Hebrew, not in Mandarin or Cantonese; an adult child who reads English is welcome in every conversation, and every Medicare Advantage plan is required to offer free interpreter services through its member line.
Medicare Advantage in Pasadena by the numbers, 2026
Pasadena sits in Los Angeles County, one of the biggest Medicare Advantage markets in the country. In 2026 the county has 74 Medicare Advantage plans open to general enrollment plus 47 Special Needs Plans, per the CMS 2026 Landscape file, and 65 of those 74 plans charge a $0 monthly plan premium. About 57 percent of the county's 1.7 million Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or other Medicare health plans (CMS, May 2026). Our analysis of the same CMS file puts the average in network out of pocket maximum across the county's general enrollment plans at $2,428, with a median of $1,700 and a range from $199 all the way to $9,250. That spread is the whole argument for comparing before you enroll: two $0 premium plans can differ by thousands of dollars in a bad year. Straight answers, and the fine print up front
Here is exactly how this works. Lara is a licensed independent insurance agent, and her help costs you nothing, because licensed agents are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through an agent, online, or directly with the insurer. What an independent agent adds is the comparison: she is appointed with several carriers rather than one. She does not carry every plan available in Los Angeles County, and she will tell you when something she cannot sell looks like the better fit for you.
Medicare help in Pasadena from a licensed broker
Goulson Insurance Services Inc. is an independent insurance agency, and our agents work as licensed brokers for Pasadena families. Independent means no single insurance carrier employs us or decides what we recommend, so the comparison starts with your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. We compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D drug plans from multiple carriers side by side and help you enroll in the one that fits. The agency holds CA license 6020069, Lara Goulson holds CA license 0E69969, and the team works in English, Spanish, and Hebrew. Whether you searched for Medicare help near me, a broker, or a local agency, it is the same licensed help, and it costs you nothing, because carriers pay broker compensation, which is regulated by Medicare.
