If you already have CalPERS coverage
CalPERS describes its long term care coverage as an optional, employee paid benefit that helps participants pay for the cost of care when they need assistance with the activities of daily living. It runs the program through its third party administrator, illumifin, and sends policyholders with questions about their coverage to illumifin customer service at (800) 982-1775, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time. To log in to or register your account, CalPERS points you to the CalPERS Long-Term Care website. If you report a policyholder's death to CalPERS, its page says you must also report it to illumifin, by calling the same customer service number. For policyholders aged 75 and older and not yet on claim, CalPERS launched an Aging in Place Program, AgeAssured, in May 2024. Assured Allies administers it, participation is voluntary, and CalPERS says it is offered at no cost. The suspension applies to new applications only, and these are the services CalPERS describes for the policyholders it already has. Lara Goulson can look at an existing CalPERS policy alongside a private quote for a spouse or parent who was never enrolled, at no cost.
If you never enrolled, or are shopping for a spouse or parent
With the CalPERS program closed to new applicants, there is no CalPERS application to file, whether you are a public employee who never enrolled or you are shopping for a spouse or a parent. Coverage now comes from the private market, which has two designs: traditional standalone long term care policies and hybrid life and long term care policies. Both are underwritten on your own health: the insurer looks at your medical history, current conditions and medications before it approves an application, so your age and health when you apply decide what is open to you and what it costs. That also means a private policy can be timed to your own health rather than to an open enrollment window that may not return. Lara Goulson compares traditional and hybrid policies from several carriers at no cost, by phone or video, in English, Spanish or Hebrew. The guides below cover when to apply, how hybrid policies work, and what care costs in California.
