Medicare in Whittier by the numbers
Whittier is one of the largest communities on this site and one of the more owner occupied. Its six ZIP codes are home to 187,821 people, and 26,589 of them are 65 or older, which is 14.2 percent against 15.2 percent for Los Angeles County; 63.6 percent of occupied homes are owner occupied against 45.9 percent countywide. Those counts come from the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, summed from the age brackets rather than estimated from a percentage. They are not spread evenly: 90601 in the north holds 5,583 residents past 65, 18.6 percent of its population, with a median age of 41.6; 90603 on the east side is 78.5 percent owner occupied with a median household income of $136,705; 90602 around uptown is the youngest and least owner occupied at 38.9 percent, with a median household income of $68,505; and 90604, 90605 and 90606 across the south and west hold 4,820, 4,879 and 4,860 residents past 65, with 65 to 72 percent of homes owner occupied. Of residents aged 5 and over, the Spanish speaking share runs from 28.5 percent in 90603 to 54.1 percent in 90606.
Two general hospitals inside the city, and Downey's and Montebello's a few minutes out
PIH Health Whittier Hospital at 12401 Washington Blvd, in 90602, is licensed for 488 beds, and Whittier Hospital Medical Center at 9080 Colima Rd, in 90605, for 156; both have emergency departments. West, PIH Health Downey Hospital at 11500 Brookshire Avenue is licensed for 199 and Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello at 309 W Beverly Blvd for 192. Those counts come from California state licensing records, read this month. PIH Health, Whittier Hospital Medical Center's owner and Adventist Health are separate systems, and the plan's medical group decides which of their hospitals is yours; a plan built around PIH Health's own medical group and a plan built around another group can both be sold in Whittier and send you to different doors. Medicare Advantage networks are built around medical groups rather than around the insurance company's name, so two plans carrying the same logo can reach completely different doctors, and those contracts are renegotiated year to year. Before you enroll in anything, Lara pulls each plan's current directory and confirms your doctors, your hospital and your pharmacy, and she repeats that check each fall when plans publish their changes.
A paid off house, Spanish at the table, and PIH or not
Nearly two in three Whittier households own their home, and where a paid off house is the largest asset in the family, the long term care conversation, how care would be paid for and how a home is treated under Medi-Cal's rules, belongs in the same review, before it is urgent. Nearly half of Whittier speaks Spanish at home, and Lara works in Spanish and English in the same conversation, so the parent turning 65 and the adult child helping with the paperwork can both follow every line. The plan question here usually comes down to the medical group: PIH Health runs both a hospital and a medical group in Whittier, and which plans hold that group, and which send you elsewhere, is checked in each plan's current directory before anything is signed. On the east side, with incomes above six figures, the income surcharge on Part B and Part D premiums for higher earners comes up, set from the tax return of two years earlier and correctable with Form SSA-44 after a life changing event such as retirement. Around uptown and in the south, the help check comes first: Extra Help lowers Part D drug costs for people under its income and resource limits, and someone with both Medicare and Medi-Cal can be eligible for a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan, of which Los Angeles County has 47 in 2026. Across the county's general enrollment Medicare Advantage plans, out of pocket maximums run from $199 to $9,250 in 2026, and the Part D cap is $2,100.
Medicare Advantage in Whittier by the numbers, 2026
Whittier sits in Los Angeles County, one of the biggest Medicare Advantage markets in the country. In 2026 the county has 74 Medicare Advantage plans open to general enrollment plus 47 Special Needs Plans, per the CMS 2026 Landscape file, and 65 of those 74 plans charge a $0 monthly plan premium. About 57 percent of the county's 1.7 million Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage or other Medicare health plans (CMS, May 2026). Our analysis of the same CMS file puts the average in network out of pocket maximum across the county's general enrollment plans at $2,428, with a median of $1,700 and a range from $199 all the way to $9,250. That spread is the whole argument for comparing before you enroll: two $0 premium plans can differ by thousands of dollars in a bad year. Straight answers, and the fine print up front
Here is exactly how this works. Lara is a licensed independent insurance agent, and her help costs you nothing, because licensed agents are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they represent. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through an agent, online, or directly with the insurer. What an independent agent adds is the comparison: she is appointed with several carriers rather than one. She does not carry every plan available in Los Angeles County, and she will tell you when something she cannot sell looks like the better fit for you.
Medicare help in Whittier from a licensed broker
Goulson Insurance Services Inc. is an independent insurance agency, and our agents work as licensed brokers for Whittier families. Independent means no single insurance carrier employs us or decides what we recommend, so the comparison starts with your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. We compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D drug plans from multiple carriers side by side and help you enroll in the one that fits. The agency holds CA license 6020069, Lara Goulson holds CA license 0E69969, and the team works in English, Spanish, and Hebrew. Whether you searched for Medicare help near me, a broker, or a local agency, it is the same licensed help, and it costs you nothing, because carriers pay broker compensation, which is regulated by Medicare.
